Windows 10 is coming July 29th-Are you going to jump in?

I've had the Windows 10 Pro Insider Preview Evaluation Copy Build 10130 and I have to say I love it and I hate it. At one point, my computer had a 'critical error' and crashed horribly. I was able (with much patience) to restore it to a previous build of Windows 10 but it still keeps kicking out my Microsoft Office 365 University. Thank goodness I save everything to Dropbox.

Will you get it? Why? Why not?

Years ago, I was excited to try all of the Release Candidates (RC) versions of Windows. But lately, I'm just not excited any more, especially after I tried Windows 8.

Windows 7 has been very good and stable for everything I do on my computers. But I am still going to give Windows 10 a try. If I really hate it, I'll go back to Windows 7.

Windows 7 is a good, stable platform.  I went immediately from 8 to 8.1. It was very different from 7. It took a while to get used to it but now I find it more organized.

I think my hubby is running Windows 7. If I let him, he'd still have Millennia or Vista...

I think Microsoft realized that a lot of people jumped ship when Windows 8 came about. And the only way to win those people back is to offer Windows 10 for free.

If Microsoft charged even $20 for Windows 10, I would just stick with Windows 7. If it's free, yes, I'll give it a try.

Well Microsoft got wise and realized that Desktop computers were been being phased out of the home and replaced with tablets, and a smart phones. So they focused on Server OS, Cloud, Office, XBOX and their own tablets.

I've got a question for those who've already tried the Windows 10 preview. Is Cortana "always on?" And can you control just about every function of the computer by voice? (e.g. Click Start, Open Word, Type Dear Sir or Madame, Close Internet Explorer, etc.) Or is it more like Siri, where it just answers questions from the cloud?

This way, you won't have to download Windows 10 on every computer you want to upgrade. Just download it once, make a USB installer or burn to DVD, and you can use it on the next computer when you're done.

I'm happy with Windows 7.  My wife moved to Windows 8.  I'm not a fan of it.  Free Windows 10 is not enough to get me to move.  Keep in mind you get what you pay for.

I know this thread is now old but honestly, if you like Windows 7 you'll love Windows 10. You can have it look like Win 7 or you can have it look like Win 8 or a combo of both. Win 7 desktop and Win 8 when you click the "Start" button complete with live tiles.

Now I've never been a Microsoft fan but honestly it's worth a look. I'm impressed. Do a clone of your existing system and then take the free download. Play with it, set it up, and if you don't like it then re-install your old setup but give it enough time to make it through your own learning curve. It's really good and you know Microsoft will eventually stop supporting the old versions. Why wait until the 11th hour and be pressured into a forced change?

Just some friendly advice.

if you like win7 you would like win10???  My foot!!!! Two completely different beasts.  If you like giving away your privacy, then go ahead and upgrade to win10.

Agreed. I have 5 PCs running Win7 and a 6th which just "upgraded" to Win10. I think I'll be keeping Win7 on all the others as long as possible.

I admit that I'm accustomed to Windows 7 and have all those machines finely tuned, but there are a few too many little instabilities and irritating issues with Win10 ... Slow network discovery, UI inconsistencies, Edge browser is definitely a work in progress (thankfully you can use IE11 or Chrome), and Windows Search is hit-or-miss, to name a few.

OTOH, Win10 is a vast improvement over Win8.1

I'm have Win10 running in an Oracle VM VirtualBox on my Win7 machine, but only because I needed to have it to create a SD card for Win10 IoT on a Raspberry Pi.  It's not bad, but I haven't seen anything that makes me want to ditch Win7 for it yet.  Extended support - which is all I need - for Win7 will continue until January 14, 2020, so I've got plenty of time to prepare and plan for an upgrade.

Obviously I'm not all that conversant with Windows 10 vs 7 any more. I do like Win 10 for the 2 things I use it for. I used to run Win 3, 3.1, 95, Millennium, 7 but when 8 came out I moved to OS X. I hated  Win 8. I've now moved on and won't go back but gee I thought 10 wasn't all that bad. You can customize it however you like which I thought was nice.

Like you I used just about every microsoft windows and most dos versions.   Win10 is the first version that has over 10 pages of privacy settings you have to go through if you want your privacy. And those pages keep changing so Microsoft can bypass your settings with other settings.   Win10 is the first version where you cannot disable or uninstall some of their bloatware apps.  Some that I do uninstall, usually gets reinstall at the next update.  If it were not for classic shell, it would be extremely painful to use.  I only have it installed because I need it for reference in help forums.  Otherwise I run linux mint for normal everyday usage.
