I'm in the UK and I want to buy Alexa Echo for hubby's birthday and a few days' after his birthday he's going to visit family in the USA who would like to add to his birthday by buying him Echo Dots - will they work in the UK with his Alexa here?

Since US can also buy from UK site, how about an Amazon gift certificate from UK he can use when he returns.  Maybe they could even buy the UK version to be shipped to US, but that is a hassle and potential problem no one needs.
