Weights
« on: June 04, 2017, 02:53:04 pm »
I have asked a number of questions in the last few months and Alexa is pretty solid on simple facts... but today, My Grandson asked me if a ton was heavy.

I told him to ask Alexa how many pounds in a ton... He did and she came back with "1 imperial long ton = 2,240 pounds". However, if I ask her how much a ton weighs (a poor quality question I think) she tells me "A ton weighs 2000 pounds." ... go figure... I was unaware of the existence of an "Imperial Long Ton". Damn Americans don't go imperial either normally... Why they don't have a Weights section in the settings... I can't fathom. They have the temp and distance handled...

There are actually 3 different ton's:
1) The US ton (or short ton), which is 2,000 pounds
2) The Imperial ton (or long ton), which is 2,240 pounds
3) The Metric ton (or tonne), which is 1000 kg (2,204.6 lbs)

So, it's not as simple as metric/Imperial weights and it's not surprising that Alexa would get confused.

And to really mess with your head, ask Alexa, "How many ounces are there in one troy pound?"

I also got the same answer when asking the question the way your grandson asked it.  When I ask Google Home the same question the answer was, 1 US ton equals 2000 pounds.

Was shipped Priority Mail cross country (!) but could be here in less than a week, I guess. (Will I really have to say Hey, or OK Google?.  Give me a break.)

Yeah... once we found that weird tonnage answer, I started playing with other weights and Troy ounces was one of them... It just makes no sense that the first answer in a US Search would go to the Imperial Long Ton. My Grandson is 9 and could only associate the Imperial part with Star Wars stuff... just to make things more crazy.
