When trying to make a call, Alexa only recognises me as a contact, nobody else

I've managed to make a call to my own mobile phone from my Echo, but when I try to call anyone else in my contacts Alexa says it can't find them. It tells me to open the Alexa app, but having done so I don't see any option to view them.
Does anyone know how to ring other people?
