Remote control stops working after playing music on multiple devices

I have an Echo Dot w/remote and an Echo Plus and playing music through both devices works fine.
The problem is it disrupts the remote control functionality even when I stop playing music.
It must use BT. The Echo Dot will give an error "There is a problem entering pairing mode"

Is there an easy fix? The only one that works now is restating the Echo Dot to restore the RC connection.

I recall reading that you can't use an echo device connected to a bluetooth speaker when playing music on multiple devices. I'm guessing all bluetooth devices are affected, not just speakers.
