I don't have a CD player so just bought a portable one. I wanted it to play through my dot. Is that possible?

Get a mini Bluetooth transmitter/receiver and plug it into the headphone jack of the CD player.

Probably won't sound great.

it would help if you told what model the portable cd player is?   without knowing what features are available, there is no to know if it can connect.

Anything with a mini headphone jack for headphones can be setup the same way with a BT Transmitter sending BT signal to an Alexa device.  It is how I once set up an iPod to play thru Echo.  I agree CD sound through a Dot will not sound too good mainly because a Dot is pretty bad for music playing.  Not worth the effort, really.  Use a decent BT speaker instead.
