Hue bridge 1 not found by echo

after sending back the hue bridge 2.0 because I have read that it isnt compatible with echo.

I had to buy a 1.0 bridge on ebay. I wanted to use it for a light strip  version 2 (brighter than v1).


I have the latest hue app and echo update.

the hue strip works via the app. so I know the bridge is working.
echo doesn't find the hue bridge.
Echo does find 2 wemo wall outlets, which I believe are 2.4 ghz.

I did the usual power cycle on both units.
re-connected echo to the router .

any ideas or advice?
this shouldn't be this difficult.

I'm using Hue Bridge 2.0 with no problems..
