Echo spot bandwidth usage
« on: January 08, 2018, 04:41:40 pm »
I purchased an Echo spot.  I have an Amazon Echo and 4 Echo dots.  My Plume WiFi lets me see bandwidth traffic and looking at the Echo spot it is using twice the bandwidth of my Echo.  In 24 hours the spot has used 300 MB while my original echo has used half that amount. I've only used the spot once or twice in this 24 hour period and I only have the clock showing on the display.  That seems a lot of bandwidth for doing nothing.  I'm on a WISP and I have a limited amount of download bandwidth per 30 days.  The dots don't even show up.  A device that is sitting there unused is my 2nd used device behind my Firestick?

Try unplugging it for 15 minutes or so, then plug it back in. It may be "stuck" trying to update, and just keeps trying to download. If that doesn't work, call Amazon support. It's been reported a few times here.

Thanks for the suggestion.  I have unplugged the device for more than 15 minutes and it hasn't made a difference. In the last 24 hours it has used 293 MB.  I checked with support via chat and got

"I would like to inform you that, all the echo devices doesn't have a screen and inbuilt software in it. Also, there are no pre installed applications on the device so it just uses the wifi sensors to connect with the application hence the bandwidth consumption would be very less when compared to the echo spot. As echo spot uses the screen and backend application always run that is the reason, it uses a huge bandwidth."

So I asked to return the Spot and he was nice enough to issue me a return.  He also said he would have engineering look into this.
