How to share accounts to enable smart home devices

My wife is the main account holder for our Alexas.
She added me and I can see all of the smart devices and skills on my phone. I can even control them via app.

However, if I add an additional smart plug, Alexa says it cannot find it even though I can control it via the Alexa app. The only way I can get it to work via voice is for my wife to add it instead of me.

Is there a way I can also add devices that the Alexas will recognize via voice control?

Did she just add you to see or did she add you as a family member?  My daughter does not live with me but we are together on the same account and she can mess with me and turn my lights on and off. I think you have to have your own account firs
