Thanks dragon 123. That's really helpful. So if I understand correctly, without the bridge I can either have the dimmer connected direct to the bulb, or the Echo connected to the bulb, but not both at the same time.
What extra functionality would the bridge give me, other than being able to use the Echo and the Dimmer on the same bulb?
Thanks again
I don't own a echo plus, so I'm not sure what that can and cannot do by itself. My thinking it is fairly basic, on/off/dim and no color and stuff (?). With the bridge, you can do everything the hue app has to offer (and even way more, if you use 3rd party apps).
So you get to create scenes, set colors, dim lights, program dimmer switches/motion sensors/tap switches, use home&away, wake up/sleep/custom routines, timers, entertainment area and the cool formulas the hue labs comes up with.
With 3rd party apps connected to your bridge you can set lights to music, create a 'haunted house', 'fireworks', 'rain forest' etc, program your dimmer switches for more than the 3 scenes per button, etc etc.
