Echo and Echo Dot on same account, but don't get same music services

I have an Echo in my kitchen and a dot in my kids room. They are both logged into the same amazon account. I run amazon prime music (not the $14.99/month one) and Pandora through Echo. For whatever reason the echo dot only seems to run amazon prime music and not pandora. I know this because songs that play on the echo I only get a sample to play on the dot.

How can I get the dot to play music from pandora as well? Do I need to set up multi-room? If I do it that way will it play in both places at the same time?

Yeah we did the group thing, but that doesn't really work because it plays the music over the entire group and we only wanted it in one room.
