Cannot connect echo dot to my Sony xperia

I have been try for hours to connect my Echo Dot to my Sony xperia. I have to choose manual setup as the auto one does not get anywhere.
In the manual setup it see's my router and i can put in the wifi password but it does not connect, i have tried this numerous times but all end in failure.
I have a Virgin router and there are numerous devices connected to it with no problems.

Something to do with 2.4 and 5Ghz bands, possibly?  Can't remember if an Echo can/use see both.

what exactly are you trying to do, install alexa or play music?   if play music, then you will have to connect via bluetooth not wifi

I am trying to install the Echo Dot onto the wifi.  The auto setup does not find it at all, so i tried the manual setup, the Echo finds the router (so it tells me) i put in the wifi password it then just sits doing sweet FA till the Echo times out and goes back to the blue light again.
When the echo statrs there is a blue light, which then turns to orange for wifi connection.
