TuneIn favorite stations
« on: April 06, 2016, 01:40:30 pm »
Hi there,

I have a TuneIn account, but the Alexa app doesn't allow me to log on to it.

Is there a way to access my favorite stations? They are mostly from other countries, and simply calling the name usually doesn't work.

Cheers,

S

you do not need an account to use tunein on alexa.  as far as accessing your radio stations, go to the tunein station online and see what the title of the station is and use it.

I have a station I like to listen to that was not something that the Echo could access "natively".  I found the station on TuneIn and was even going to get a premium account thinking it would make it easier but like you found out you can not log onto your account through Echo.  I ended up putting the TuneIn station in as a favourite in the Echo app. Since I just have the one TuneIn station I just tell her to play TuneIn radio and she plays "the last TuneIn station you listened to" even though she pronounces the name of the station wrong  ::)

How do I do that? I can't find a way.

It is easy, but not intuitive.  I just had to remind myself again so I could post this.

1. get a station playing; one you want to add to favorites
2. once playing, get in to Now Playing in main menu
3. notice screen upper right corner and see station logo with a down arrow,
4. tap the arrow and see 'favorite station" and tap that to add to Tunein favorites

Favorites are found near the bottom of the Tunein menu.
Now that you are in the groove, add all the stations you want as favorites, one after, one.

There is a way to delete/remove favorites, but I can't remember.  How about you figure it out and remind me how!

Oh, now I get it. Definitely not intuitive, but works for me.

Thanks a lot!

-But I'm still waiting for proper TuneIn integration ;)

For others looking, on my Android Alexa app, I had to go to "Queue" under "Now Playing". Then I saw the little gray down arrow and could select "Favorite Station".

Calling the name of a station does work, but sometimes the name you have to use isn't the obvious one. I couldn't get BBC Radio London until I added "94.9"; now I just say "play 94.9". And for the King FM Symphonic Channel - that's what Alexa calls it - I have to say "K-I-N-G-F-M ..." Adding a station to favourites doesn't seem to make it any easier for Alexa to find.

Stations ARE easier to find and play from Favorites.  You just select them using the Alexa App.

Thanks for that! I couldn't get Alexa to find my local BBC radio station by naming it but adding 104.9 fm solved the problem.
Interesting, Alexa found the same station on radioplayer first try.

i wrote myself an alexa skill to allow for calling: alexa ask my radio to play preset 2.

This is to make it easier to play specific stations that sometimes are hard to find or remember their frequency using alexa's tunein radio skill.

it can also play a station from tunein radio using a general query, but also, unlike the tunein radio skill, play a random station from a genre or artist (stations that are related to the artist).

you can find the instructions on adding the skill here:

https://github.com/itaybia/RadioSearchAndPresetAlexaSkill/blob/master/README.md

examples:

- Alexa, Tell my radio to play artist pearl jam

- Alexa, Tell my radio to play genre jazz

- Alexa, Tell my radio to play psytrance

- Alexa, Tell my radio to play indie experience

- Alexa, Tell my radio to play preset 4

- Alexa, Tell my radio to save to preset 4

- Alexa, Tell my radio to delete preset 4

Sorry for gravedigging, but I followed the steps above and got the skill created. Now, how do I add it to my Raspberry Pi Alexa? Do I need to publish it to add it? Please let me know...thanks.

I find it easier to use my hands rather than my voice to play tunein on alexa app. Like I said I prefer it that way coz I see what's currently playing.
