Echo response-- Other users have asked.....
« on: July 02, 2019, 02:40:26 pm »
Now when I ask a question it responds with  "Other users have asked blah blah blah, would you like to know the answer to that"  or something along those lines.
UGHHHHHHHHH   anyway to turn that off?
If I want to ask that question I would?

AGREE!  These gadgets by Amazon and Google are being "too helpful" to a fault.  Sometimes I say hello to either to check volume level, etc. and get a blah- blah reply like from the  google Home which says, "Hello, I was thinking of playing a game (or baking cookies) do you want to join me)  What BS, , hell NO! and shut up.

It probably will take feedback comments from us users to stop this sort of nonsense from getting worse.

Check your echo skills and see if maybe a new one that you'd not actually want, got enabled by someone while you weren't;t looking... or even by you asking for something that triggered a new skill to enable... I have enabled 2 skills on accident just by asking questions of Alexa... now I look there first when I get a new action from her without being invoked.

About a year ago, Amazon did say they have some kind of technology that can determine a person's mood when talking to Alexa. So by the tone of your voice, Alexa is supposed to learn how to reply. I don't know if they actually deployed this tech in the current Alexa.

Here is the article from VentureBeat about that.

I have actually had a couple installed because for whatever reason, the firetable I use as a cheap show, does not recognized the newton skill.    I am really thinking of replacing it with a real show.

Having 9 Alexa devices in the house makes it easy to get erroneous skills installed... Especially with my in-laws, who are very challenged when it comes to technology. The old Man Curses at Alexa all the time and he thinks he's being cute... so he's the one I suspect causes the most issues. The old woman just tries to stay completely away for anything Alexa, because she thinks she will cause an issue... but she does use it to turn her bedroom light on/off... other than that she just complains a lot about everything...  ;D

How/where do you check your enabled skills?

I check the skills on the Alexa web page...

Alexa.Amazon.com

It should be available on pretty much any computer if you sign into your account on that page.

Are you aware of "Brief Mode"? I'm not 100% sure that Brief Mode handles your exact situation, but it would be worth a try.

I believe that you must turn it on in the App, but you might be able to toggle it on and off via voice once it is enabled. Again, I'm not 100% sure and I'm not at home to try it.

BTW...are you aware of Whisper Mode? Once enabled, if you whisper to Alexa, she'll whisper back. Full voice requests will still get a full voice response. Whisper Mode is a nice feature for the device that's in the bedroom or nursery.
