I am thinking about dropping the hue hub and let zigbee on the 3rd generation show handle things so I can have some local control.   Not too sure how to do this.   Will I have to reset all the bulbs before the change or would I be able to unplug the hub and just do a discover?   Also will I still need the hue app?

For the hue bulbs that use zigbee you will have to put them in pairing mode and then discover devices. I would recommend keeping the hub. I have 3 zigbee hues (free with other purchases) that connect to an echo hub and I have no control over power state when there is an outage. When paired with an echo zigbee hub the hues always power on after an outage regardless of the previous state. Not something you want in the middle of the night. If your hues are also bluetooth then you can set them up in the hue bluetooth app to power on/off however you like.
