Why do you block updates for your Fire TV?

According to Amazon, the Echo, Dot 1, and Dot 2 should be version 4148.
But my Dot 2 shows version 561179520.

Puzzled as to how my 4172 fits into that as it looks like a progression.

Had one Echo at version 4148. Now it is showing version 4172.

Two other Echo units are at version 4008. Won't update no matter what I try.

Sorry this isn't a negative answer but for more info Google. "blocking Fire TV updates" or search AFTVNews.com, its not a secret.

Thanks for that tip about Mute, giving that a go now. I'm still on 3173

No joy, still not updating, neither is my Dot even when I use someone elses wifi.

I get the impression, because it failed to download the update at first use. Therefore no further updates will download. (Bricked in effect!)

If I don't find a solution today or tomorrow. I'm returning all my Echo's and my Dot back to Amazon. Maybe the replacements will update.

No, your Echos and Dot are not "bricked".  That term means that they're no longer functional and incapable of being returned to functionality via a reset or other simple recovery mechanism.

The update is being rolled out in controlled phases, so not all devices are supposed to receive it yet.  Be patient.

I don't know.  My Echos are both still on 4008.

One Echo and one Dot have 4008.  The other one has 4172.

If I understand this thread correctly, I need to update the Echo and Dot with 4008 and the one with 4172 is fine.  But can I assume the newest Echo Dot, the new model (white) which has the VERY different software version, IS up to date?  When I first plugged it in that was the first thing it did, update itself, and I assume it will be on a different OS from the other devices.

The links you gave are about HOW to block Fire TV updates, and I asked you WHY YOU block them  I have seen many of the urban legends about WHY, especially the ones about Kodi app.  That rumor has been around for quite a while.  My Kodi is fine on two Fire sticks and I expect the stories about Amazon zapping it are greatly exaggerated and rumors.  I do not block Fire TV updates.

My Dot (second gen) is also on 561179520 and it had updated itself immediately. So, new UK Echo - 4170, new UK Dot 561179520.

I know it's only a number, but I wonder why the Echo and Dot software version numbers are so vastly different in their format.

My new UK Dot has a similar crazy long software version number.

Is there some place where we can see all the new things that get added/improved with each version for both devices and their wildly different software version numbers?

And now I see, according to Amazon, that you CANNOT force a software update.  So this thread is kind of pointless.

It's too bad, because I really *need* one of my Dots to update (since it sometimes "hears" what another one does).  You'd think this would be something Amazon would make sure could be done given how important this particular update is for them to sell more Dots (I guess they figure the new ones will do it automatically and don't care about any old ones).

I thought I would check my 2 gen2 dots and both of them have 51179920.  Yes, I typed it right, not 9520 but 9920.  Do they update that often?
