I did that - turns out it's your network password it wants, not your router key. At least, that's how mine works

As far as I know, no device want's your WEP key when you are signing in the first time, it wants the passwprd to your network.  Same as if a friend is signing on to your home network.

WEP has been shown to be cracked in just minutes. Because of numerous vulnerabilities, WiFi Alliance phased out WEP in favor of WPA and WPA2 back in 2003 (about 13 years ago). If you are still using WEP, you are using vulnerable encryption technology. Very few wireless devices even support WEP these days, unless it's from the pre-2003 era. Although I have not verified this, I highly doubt that Echo supports using WEP. Most smartphones probably won't support it either.

Virtually ALL companies today strongly recommend using WPA2 / AES security on any device that has the feature to do so.
My router, phones and tablets all use WPA2/AES, and the Echos and other connected products love it. 

I have turned off all other modes other than N on the router so it speeds up things, too.  All my G stuff is retired.
