With a Dot in your car you should be able to pull in to your driveway and use your voice to turn on lights both inside and outside, true?  (If your home has the appropriate products)

This can work, but there may be a delay if the Dot tries to connect to your home wifi vs. your hotspot once it is in range. If so, tell it to turn on the lights when you're a bit further away.

I still prefer using a Dot in the car. iPhone's Siri can do a lot but many times, Siri wants to show me results on the screen instead of speaking it to me. And that's the deal breaker.

I'm not sure if it is the same on an iphone, but on an android phone you can install the free app "alexa listens" which gives you (most of) alexa functionality
