Hi there

Today I started using the messaging/calls option on my echo.  A friend left me a couple of messages which I received. The thing is, my parents (who live in a different property) also received my friends messages through their echo, how can this have happened?

No, separate accounts.

The Parents' echos are somehow married to your account through possibly how they were originally purchased... if you bought them by ordering from Amazon, they were already set up with your account info. In order for them to be completely separate they have to be completely removed from and forgotten by your controls, then set up separately...

You may have already done this... and I may be wrong... but this is where I would start. Complete and total disconnect Deactivate... basically reset the Echo. Complete and total re-installation and set-up.

Otherwise, there is no reason there should be someone else getting your messages.

Thanks for replying. Does seem odd, I've had my echo dot since the summer. Bought my parents the full size one for Xmas and dad set it up with his own Amazon log in details. Will look into it further.

Do you have Amazon Household set up? If this is set up then this would be linking the two accounts and both Echo devices may receive the messages. To prevent this you can either remove the account from the Household or make sure that each device is using the right profile - ask "which account is this" and then "switch account" if it is the wrong one.
